Life as a sophomore in college has begun. Classes are overbooked, boring, and hot. The people are fun though. The only thing I took away from class today was the realization that I need to learn to manage my relationships better. I want to meet more people, but I can’t even devote time to the people that deserve it. WOOPS.
Ben Gibbard: the genius behind Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service (his side project electro synth-pop band)

I think Death Cab is one of the sparkling examples of the state of “indie” music today. It’s late and I don’t want to get into it in detail but it’s kind of interesting to talk about. A few days ago, a couple of my floormates were having a discussion on this very topic and any musichead will agree: the term “indie” means nothing close to what it did twenty years ago. What was once an idealistic form of avoiding major labels and giving an audience an honest taste of musicality has been reduced to a platform for self-proclaimed hipsters to flaunt their musical knowledge. (I realize I’m digging myself into a bigger hole by writing this) Needless to say, it’s certianly not a bad thing, it’s just interesting to watch this genre of music unfold.
Take Death Cab for example. Relatively unknown 6 years ago, people caught onto the Postal Service way before they ever learned about DCFC. Several albums later, a major label, and nearly 61 million scrobbes on last.fm, DCFC is still considered relatively “indie”, yet still manages to sport music videos all over MTV while being advertised by the media. Such is the life of a breakout “indie” artists, I guess. Then again, what do I know. What I do know is that Death Cab is pretty sweet and Ben Gibbard gets mad props for being good friends with Jenny Lewis, the woman who I am going to propose to in a few years. Love you, JL.
